From Thrifted Mask to Raw Art

Let’s rewind to 2022.

I had this idea for a YouTube series called ART DIY. I filmed a few things. Edited some videos. And then… life happened.

Somewhere between burnout, two house moves, and general chaos, the idea got shelved. Literally. The mask sat on my shelf, painted but unpublished. Waiting.

Fast forward to now, and here we are.
The series has a new name — Rebel Craft — because that’s what it really is. Not just DIY. Not just crafting. But reclaiming. Reusing. Rebelling against perfection and plastic aesthetics. Making honest stuff from forgotten junk.

This episode? It’s about a weird little wooden mask I found in a thrift store. Nothing fancy. Just one of those things no one else wants. So obviously, I wanted it.

I painted it in layers. Raw, messy, symbolic. It turned into something emotional, strange, and totally mine.

If you look closely, you’ll see fragments of text across the mask: lyrics from Tall Tall Shadow by Basia Bulat. That song meant the world to me during that heavy, messy time. It’s about running from your own shadows… and ending up wearing a mask just to cope. That hit home.

Music often finds its way into my work like that. Not in a polished way. In scraps. In whispers. It’s part of how I express myself freely.

Back then, I thought I was just filming a fun tutorial. But now I see it differently. This mask is a reminder. That it’s okay to fall apart. That it’s powerful to make something even when you feel like a mess.

Making this video again, revisiting it, sharing it, feels like taking back a piece of myself.

So if you’ve got some forgotten thing lying around… an old frame, a weird vase, a creepy doll head, don’t throw it out. Paint it. Glue something on it. Make it loud. Make it yours.

Because beauty doesn’t live in shiny perfection. It lives in the raw, real stuff that tells your story.

Thanks for watching. See you in the next Rebel Craft.
